Pokes

A year ago or so Catelyn referred to shots as pokes. Hence the title.

So two days ago I woke up with the impression that i needed to get Jocelyn and Landon caught up on their shots. But then I spent the rest of the day in tears as I worried about the controversy of Autism being related to the triple dose shot MMR and what not.

I don't know why I kept falling apart, but I did. Every time I would look at Jocelyn playing and laughing or when Landon would holler from the other room "Charge!" or "Ka-Boom!" I would break down in tears worried about my/our choice to immunize.

I have heard vague horror stories of kids who got those shots and then one day it was like a light went out in them and they stopped communicating, lost eye contact with people....etc. I couldn't bare the thought that that might happen to my kids, now that I know them and their personalities. So the tears would keep rolling down my cheeks every stinkin' time I just looked at them.

Gosh, I was frustrated that I couldn't turn the water off. Poor Landon. He kept asking me what was wrong. I told him I was just feeling sad. He asked me if I missed someone. I white lied. Told him, "Yes, BJ." It wasn't something I wanted him to worry about and he sweetly replied, "Me, too."

We immunized Catelyn, and she has been fine. I am convinced that if the Lord has an autistic child, or something like that in store for our family, it will happen and come to us regardless of whether or not we immunize. I feel confident that immunizing is a smart choice and the right choice for us. But my hormonal and pregnancy brain just couldn't handle the mental stress of physically giving my kids "pokes."

I cried more at the doctors office than Jocelyn and Landon. The poor nurse. I told her I was fine, but she probably thought I was insane.

It's over now, and I haven't shed any tears about it since, but it sure made my day pretty lousy.

What brave kids I have.

I have had those same emotions, but I was relieved recently to read that the studies that showed the relationship of the immunizations to autism were not read correctly and that in fact, there is not a proven connection. Hope that helps you! Glad you followed the prompting!

I love that you guys call them Pokes! It is super cute to say and it doesn't sound as bad :0) We didn't get Jonas's MMR, but that's the only one. We will just do it later, when he's older. I know there are two sides to everything and the doctors always say that there's no connection, but it doesn't quite satisfy my anxiety. I could go on and on, but I won't. And I DO agree with you that if Heavenly Father wanted us to have a child with autism, then we'd get it one way or another.
I'll talk to you later about LOST. Hopefully we'll get to watch it tonight!

Amen to being emotional when you're pregnant.

It is totally a tough decision. I never thought that it would be. It is nice to know that we each have the ability and opportunity to pray about it and find out what to do for our individual children. Anyway, I also read your other post and am sorry you had a bad day. Bad day seems not to be the right phrase, but anyway I am sure that you made loads lighter for those around you like you always do! You have a gift for that which is why people come to you! If you ever need a hand call. I am always around! : )

I agree about the shots. At one point I even had my own immunization schedule that I had researched and decided to use. I had done tons of research and praying. But then... it was wierd. I went in for Grady's first appointment for shots. While talking with the doctor I just had this peaceful feeling come over me and I really felt like I should do the normal schedule.

I totally agree that if Heavenly Father wants one of our trials to be having a child with autism then shots wont make a difference.

It's still hard though. I always just have to remind myself that one little poke is lots better then some horrible disease.
